Does God have to punish sin?

We’ve heard it many times, “God must punish sin or He wouldn’t be just.” It is interesting that they say “punish sin” since sin is not a thing that can be punished. How do you punish theft or murder? It seems there is something they are trying to avoid by saying it this way. Do they mean “God must punish us to be just”? Or do they mean “God must punish Christ to be just”? What exactly MUST God do to be just?

Who must God punish?

Must Justice punish the original offenders? They will say no, only Christ could pay for sins. We never could. And if we never could, we were never called to pay for them to begin with. And if we were never called to pay for them to begin with, then Jesus couldn’t have been a substitute for us. If Justice called for “only Christ” to pay for sins, then that is what MUST be done to satisfy justice and nothing else would even be considered. Therefore God did not call for mankind to pay for their own sins and we were never on “death row” to begin with. And there can be no substitution for what Justice requires.

God can and does forgive

Of course God has and does forgive sins. He forgave David after seeing his repentant heart. “And David said to Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord. And Nathan said to David, And the Lord has put away thy sin; thou shalt not die” (2 Samuel 12:13). David did suffer the consequences for his actions but God did not give him death as a punishment.

What justice will and will not do

Justice is never satisfied with injustice (punishing the innocent or letting the willfully unrepentant guilty go free and continue in sin with impunity). On the other hand, Justice shows mercy when mercy is due and does not punish those whom God has forgiven.

God always does what is beneficial to all. Just as it is beneficial not to punish those who have repented and have learned their lesson, it is also beneficial to punish those who deserve to be punished. If someone is defiant and sins knowing what they are doing, God will punish them. Punishment is used as a deterrent. It isn’t good for anyone for wrongdoers to be allowed to continue in their evil.
